Common Cause hails yesterday’s ruling by the Arizona Supreme Court as a clear victory for both Chairwoman Mathis and the Commission. It is clear that in a partisan power play by the Governor and her state senate supporters they overreached. However, we remain cautiously optimistic that the Commission will now be allowed to continue on and complete its vital redistricting work. And, that the will of Arizona voters when they went to the ballots in 2000 and said Yes to this Commission and No to partisan gerrymandering remains alive and kicking. We encourage everyone concerned about this process though to remain vigilant. Because, unlike the Governor who apparently remains unconvinced, we think the door to any further coercion or partisan intrusion should now be shut for good.
Thanks also to the Arizona Eagletarian which helped facilitate a healthy and robust debate on this important issue during this process.
